APKGK (2009)

Satisfaction Not Guaranteed, Laughs Guaranteed

Ranbir-KatrinaSometimes it doesn’t really matter how sensible a joke is, as long as it makes you laugh. Likewise, it doesn’t really matter that Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (APKGK) has a clichéd storyline because it really makes you laugh your guts out. Well, at least in most parts. And in the parts where it doesn’t Ranbir’s histrionics definitely will.

We’ve all heard of the hero likes girl, girl likes another boy, and finally in true Hindi fillum ishtyle girl realises her love for the hero — all’s well that end’s well — story. It’s the same with APKGK. The story is so outdated that one wonders if the movie has any story at all. To be honest, it’s doesn’t. But who cares? You’ll be so busy laughing that you won’t bother about the story.

Reminiscent of Raj Kumar Santoshi’s previous comedy Andaz Apna Apna, this flick is a comedy of errors laugh-riot. The characters, especially Prem (Ranbir), make you shriek, squeal and jump in your seat with their comicality. Ranbir Kapoor is a revelation with his comic timing as the simple, yet smart Prem a.k.a President of Happy Club. Katrina adds to the glamour quotient with her pretty face as Jenny and although has a substantial role depends completely on Ranbir and the script to sail through her character.

More often than not, the jokes might be jaded and slapstick but never cross the boundary to being offensive or vulgar. Most comedy flicks depend on double entendres, skin show and “gay” humour to make you laugh. Thankfully, APKGK has none of these and is simple, pure and unadulterated fun to be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.  Although you might not be satisfied with the story, the gags are guaranteed to make you laugh.

If a mature storyline and good script is what you are looking for, stay away! But if you want to laugh and be ‘happy’ like they all are in Happy Club, then go for it.
